A Rocky statue is coming to the Philadelphia Airport

When you think of Philadelphia, three images probably spring to mind: the Liberty Bell, a cheesesteak dripping in whiz, and Rocky Balboa pounding up the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps to the triumphant “Gonna Fly Now.” Soon, travelers won’t need to leave the airport to get their dose of underdog grit—because the city is getting a second Rocky statue, one that is equally as relieved not to have to take his shoes off for TSA.

The Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) will soon be home to a 10-foot bronze casting of the legendary boxer, created by sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg. The city’s Art Commission approved the plan this week, giving the Department of Aviation the green light to purchase the piece for $1.5 million. The statue will stand on a three-foot black steel base in Terminal A-West’s second-floor concourse, past security, where it will greet passengers with a backdrop of airplanes and open sky.

The statue is one of only three original Rocky castings in existence. Philadelphia already owns the famous one at the base of the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps, and Sylvester Stallone owns the other. With the airport addition, the city of Philadelphia will own two of the three statues.

The idea has been in the works since late 2024, when officials learned Schomberg was interested in selling. The artist and his family toured the airport, eventually settling on Terminal A-West for its soaring ceilings, uncluttered sightlines, and prime photo backdrop. Officials say the location offers tourists the perfect Instagram shot without ads or distractions—just Rocky and the runway.

PHL plans to install spot lighting to add depth and dimension, with programmable temperatures, to keep Rocky looking his best. The goal is to have the statue ready for the city’s 2026 semiquincentennial celebrations.

“Bringing the beloved Rocky statue to the airport is a fantastic way to celebrate our city’s rich culture in a space that welcomes travelers from across the country and around the world,” said public art director of Creative Philadelphia Marguerite Anglin. “We believe that bringing this artwork into the airport will foster a deeper connection between Philadelphians, visitors, and the cultural treasures that define our city.”
