Frank DiLella’s theater picks: ‘Mamma Mia!,’ ‘Ginger Twinsies’ and more

With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to make a choice. Look no further. “On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of “must-see” shows this week, directing you to the best of Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond.

“Mamma Mia!”

“Mamma Mia!” — here we go again, indeed! The ABBA-filled jukebox musical is dancing its way back to Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre, where it originally opened in 2001. The beloved show, centered on a mother, her daughter and three potential dads, officially opens August 14.

“Ginger Twinsies”

Off-Broadway, laughs are taking center stage at the Orpheum Theatre with “Ginger Twinsies.” Written and directed by Kevin Zak, the summer camp-set comedy puts a new twist on “The Parent Trap.”

“The plot of ‘Ginger Twinsies’: two girls who didn’t know that they’re twins, both end up at the same summer camp. They realize that they’re twins. They form a plan because they’ve never [met in real life],” said actor Russell Daniels.

“They’ve never met their other parents. So they each have one parent, so they decide, let’s switch places so we can meet the other parent and bring these two parents back together,” Daniels added. “That’s the quick version.”

“Ta-Da!”

Over at the Greenwich House Theater, Josh Sharp stars in his heartfelt and hilarious solo show “Ta-Da!” Using over 2,000 PowerPoint slides, Sharp reflects on childhood, magic and identity.

“As a boy, I was really obsessed with magic and I was a childhood magician. And even before I knew any tricks, my parents say that I used to come in the room and go, Ta-Da! So, you know, gay,” Sharp said. “I rarely say the word gay, even though a lot of the material is. We almost always just sort of sub in ta da! Is a nice little, you know.”
