There are only two parrot species in the world whose entire populations annually migrate between their breeding range in Tasmania and wintering ranges in southeastern Australia. Their migratory route takes them across Australia’s treacherous Bass Strait, which is 240 kilometers (150 miles) wide. This stretch of water is very rough, so crossing it is a perilous journey for these parrots.
