They come every year, riding the long, vertiginous escalator up from the end-of-the-line 7 train stop—anime characters come to life; marquee horror characters like the Mummy, Frankenstein’s monster, and generations of vampires; comic book superheroes (sometimes wedged into overextended stretch-fabric costumes); and any number of fantasy avatars toting weapons ranging from the medieval to the futuristic (all made from plastic, balsa wood, and other nonlethal materials, though the best of them look as if they could bring some serious blunt trauma to the less well-armed cosplayers).
