Revolutionising European railways has been on the EU’s agenda for a while now, but progress has been slow.

As the number of people travelling by plane increases and carbon emissions rise, it’s becoming clear that investment in trains must be a priority for the bloc.

In the EU in 2017, direct emissions from aviation accounted for 3.8 per cent of total CO2 emissions. The aviation sector creates 13.9 per cent of the emissions from transport, making it the second biggest source of transport GHG emissions after road transport.

But the question is, can high-speed rail networks replace airplanes in Europe?
