'Nightlife mayor' revives talk of a 24-hour club district

Walk through SoHo or the Lower East Side on a weekend, and it’s as though party life has returned to pre-pandemic times. There are lineups, guest list mavens with iPads guarding doors, and booming techno that fills the streets anytime someone opens or closes a set of steel nightclub doors.

People are seeking a break from pandemic isolation. New York’s highest-profile booster, Mayor Eric Adams, turns up on social media partying with models and hip-hop artists, among other celebrities. He has referred to himself as the nightlife mayor.
