In the wake of the Uvalde, Texas, shooting, which left 19 kids and two teachers dead earlier this week, public attention has once again focused on the systemic political factors paralyzing the U.S. gun violence debate. Texas is a deep-red state, where it’s long been considered politically career-ending to take any position in favor of gun control — even though it has seen many particularly devastating mass shootings in the past several years, prompting many Texans to adopt positions in favor of more gun control. Still, lawmakers continue to relax gun restrictions in the state.
