Inside the fight to close Rikers Island and build a new Mott Haven jail

As New York City moves forward with its plan to close the Rikers Island jail complex, the process to build on the Mott Haven replacement site in the Bronx reaches a hard-won commencement.

A request for proposals is expected to be issued in the summer, with two parties competing to build the jail: Transformative Reform Group, led by SLSCO and Sciame Construction; and Cauldwell Windgate 2022 Co., a limited-liability company. 

The Bronx replacement jail site—one of four along with Chinatown in Manhattan, Kew Gardens in Queens and Downtown Brooklyn—is the only one that’s not adjacent to a courthouse.
