MTA eliminates fare on Q70 bus between LGA and Jackson Heights

The Q70 bus, which shuttles riders 10-minutes between LaGuardia Airport and the subway in Jackson Heights, will be free to all starting May 1, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s monthly board meeting Wednesday.

Some 90% of the Q70’s passengers—more than 548,000 in 2020—already transfer to or from the subway or Long Island Rail Road, therefore eliminating the fare won’t eat into ridership revenue. What it will do, transit officials and advocates argue, is cut the times buses are forced to idle as riders pay and promote more climate-friendly mass transit over cabs and private cars.
