State considers Equal Rights Amendment, reshaping hiring and firing practices

Democrats in Albany aim to update the Equal Rights Amendment in New York to broaden discrimination protections in ways that would alter multiple workplace standards for private business across the state.

Sen. Liz Krueger, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, is working with Assembly member Rebecca Seawright of Manhattan to pass a constitutional amendment that would expand the range of individuals covered by discrimination protections in New York. The state constitution bans discrimination based on religious freedom and race. Krueger’s ERA would open these protections to include one’s gender, ethnicity, pregnancy status, disability status and sexual orientation.
