Brooklyn startup’s custom balloons photograph Earth from planet’s edge

Commercial satellite imaging is a billion-dollar industry, with large companies regularly capturing detailed images of Earth from above.

Near Space Labs, a growing startup based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, says it has found a cheaper, more precise way to capture such imagery—minus the satellite. The company uses a robot attached to a custom-designed weather balloon that can take photos from 65,000 feet up in the stratosphere, just short of reaching the final frontier.
