U.S. shuts down Belarus embassy amid attack on Ukraine

The U.S. Department of State has suspended operations at its Minsk, Belarus embassy amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Secretary Antony Blinken announced Monday morning.

Belarus, whose strongman president Alexander Lukashenko is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has served as a staging ground for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We took these steps due to security and safety issues stemming from the unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces in Ukraine,” Blinken said in a statement.
