OTTAWA, Ont. — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is revoking the Emergencies Act, but divisive debate about his government’s decision to use it is just getting started.
“The situation is no longer an emergency,” Trudeau said Wednesday on Parliament Hill. “We are confident that existing laws and bylaws are sufficient to keep people safe.”
Trudeau said meetings with police and public safety experts during the past two days “reassured” his government that existing policing tools could prevent future occupations.
