Local transit advocates and leaders praised the Federal Transit Administration’s decision to send more than $6 billion in funds to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which has struggled throughout the pandemic and is facing budget shortfalls.
That federal money will go toward operating costs, rather than upgrades or service improvements, and still represents only a temporary solution to the MTA’s troubles. Federal dollars will likely be spread. Asked about the agency’s future, advocates pointed to Albany and cited the need for additional long-term revenue streams.
