Where does all the holiday cardboard go?

The rise of e-commerce has made cardboard nearly as synonymous with the holidays as tinsel.

City carters collected just under 300,000 tons of paper garbage, which includes the cardboard detritus of many e-commerce packages, through November, as Crain’s recently reported . About 2.3 million packages are delivered to New Yorkers each day. The numbers jump this time of year. In December 2020, there were more than 31,000 tons of paper waste collected by the Department of Sanitation, an average of 23% more than any other month of the year.

The final months of the year can bring a nearly 400% increase in cardboard, said Shannon Bergstrom,
