Crash Stats: Traffic Deaths Spiked In Early 2021

An estimated 8,730 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the first three months of 2021, a 10.5% jump from fatalities projected for the same time last year. The increase in the death toll came even as driving declined, suggesting that the driving patterns and behaviors that changed significantly during the pandemic compared to previous years continue to prevail:  drivers engaged in more risky behavior, including speeding, failing to wear seat belts, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
