The New York Police Department’s confiscation of an unlicensed produce cart in the Bronx has led to questions about the protocols for handling such incidents going forward.
Cell phone videos showed Department of Sanitation workers throwing out dozens of cartons of fruits and vegetables, violating protocol in the process, officials now say. The incident outraged some New Yorkers, who couldn’t understand why the food wasn’t given away or donated to the needy.
