The head of New York state’s health department is stepping down after more than five years of service in his role. Dr. Howard Zucker is resigning as State Department Health Commissioner, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday.
Zucker, who had been appointed to his role by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2015, will be staying on in his position until a successor is found, Hochul said.
The commissioner was moving on to other ventures, and the governor agreed with his decision to step down. She iterated she had been looking to build a new team when she became governor.
“There’ll be other changes forthcoming,” Hochul said.
