New York hospitals will continue to need federal relief this year

As health systems attempted to stem their monthly losses last year, federal assistance programs provided a much-needed lifeline. Industry leaders say hospitals will still need support this year and into next year, as transitioning off those buoys might be difficult.

New York state is second in the nation in the amount of federal aid received, in total dollars and per capita, according to federal agency data collected by the Midtown-based Peterson Foundation. As of May, the state had received more than $231 billion—or $11,892 per capita—across all categories of assistance, including for health care, businesses, unemployment, education and infrastructure.
