Leading used-clothing distributor Noamex to leave the city

Noamex, a leading used-clothing wholesaler and one of the last links to the era when New York was filled with schmatta salesmen, is leaving the city and letting go of 90 employees.

“We’re relocating to another state and have found a buyer for our building,” Vice President Michael Schefren said. “I’m moving too. I can’t say more at this time.”

If you’ve ever donated apparel to Goodwill or bought something at a thrift store, odds are good your merchandise made a stop at Noamex’s 58,000-square-foot warehouse in East New York. The company processes more than 5 million garments a week, according to its website, and many are shipped overseas.
