Gov. Kathy Hochul selected State Senator Brian Benjamin as her Lieutenant Governor on Wednesday, a choice that brings both diversity and New York City insight into her administration.
The 44-year-old Benjamin, who is Black, has represented the 30th district of New York in the State Senate since 2017, a district of Manhattan neighborhoods that include parts of Harlem, the Upper West Side, Morningside Heights, Hamilton Heights, and Washington Heights. Benjamin ran unsuccessfully for the City Comptroller seat during the 2021 primary, losing to City Councilman Brad Lander.
