Curtis Sliwa vows to crack down on illegal basement apartments as NYC mayor

GOP mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa on Friday pledged to crack down on the owners of illegal basement apartments if he’s elected in November after 11 people drowned in the subterranean homes when the tail end of Hurricane Ida pounded the city.

As he toured flooded areas of Forest Hills, Queens, Sliwa vowed to issue citations to landlords who profit off the dangerous underground dwellings.
