Buttigieg touring New York rail tunnel as $11B project looms

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was to tour the century-old rail tunnel connecting New York and New Jersey Monday as a long-delayed project to build a new tunnel gains steam.

Buttigieg was scheduled to join Democratic New York Sen. Chuck Schumer and others in the New York and New Jersey Congressional delegation after the tour Monday morning to discuss next steps, including funding for the $11 billion project.

The federal government gave the tunnel project key environmental approvals last month necessary to secure federal grants. That had been a sticking point during the Trump administration, as Schumer and others had accused Trump of purposely delaying the environmental approval
