Things to Do on Your First Trip to New York
New York City is America's largest and arguably most interesting city. It is a place unlike any other and anyone who has ever been there can tell you the same. Spartan Systems rebrands as Very
“The company formerly named Spartan had the best kind of identity crisis. They had long outgrown their testosterone-fueled name (and logo, and everything else) and sought a brand reset that could grow with them and last a lifetime.” Super type design for Chattanooga-based Very, by Stefán Kjartansson in collaboration with brand strategist Kenny Ferguson and designer Farbod Kokabi, all of…

Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française
Here’s a strange one from last century, created with string for French broadcaster Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française (RTF) so that, when filmed, it produced a shimmering effect that wasn’t possible with a 2D drawing. Maybe the shimmering got lost in this old footage. Not a good logo, but I like that craftsmanship.

Ice by Pacific Cocktail Haven (PCH). The most important quarter-inch in business, a great read, via Jerry Kuyper.

60 years of Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv
In 1957, Robert Brownjohn, Ivan Chermayeff, and Tom Geismar formed Brownjohn Chermayeff & Geismar, with an office in one room on West 56th Street, NYC. During their first year they designed record album covers by the dozen for Columbia Records, numerous book jackets, and hired their first employee, Stanley Eisenman. While the firm — now Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv…

On the Hillary Clinton logo
Michael Bierut’s sketches, January 2015. “It wasn’t clever or artful. I didn’t care about that. I wanted something that you didn’t need a software tutorial to create, something as simple as a peace sign or a smiley face. I wanted a logo that a five-year-old could make with construction paper and kindergarten scissors.
